Start at the source: the heart. We explore how inner life—thoughts, desires, and daily choices—spills into families, communities, and national destiny. Guided by Mark 7, we push beyond surface rituals and ask the tougher question: what’s forming our character, and how does that formation show up in the real world?

We move from scripture to lived reality, reflecting on a brutal crime and the Red Brigades’ campaign of terror to show how pride, deceit, and envy don’t stay private. They scale. Alongside these hard moments, we lift up examples of courage and service through a Medal of Honor citation and the immigrant story it carries. The throughline is not partisanship but principle: public virtue rests on private virtue. John Adams, General MacArthur, and Ronald Reagan each underscore a civic code where duty, honor, and sacrifice aren’t museum pieces—they’re survival tools for a free people.

You’ll hear a frank look at contested teachings around marriage, a call to examine where tradition replaces truth or where convenience edits conviction, and a reminder from Psalms and Proverbs that wisdom speaks quietly while folly shouts. We pray for leaders, first responders, neighbors, and marriages, not as ritual but as alignment with a higher standard. The message is clear: laws matter and institutions matter, but neither can save a society that abandons the work of guarding the heart.

If this conversation stirs something in you—hope, resolve, a nudge to act—lean into it. Subscribe to the show, share this episode with a friend who’s ready for substance over slogans, and leave a review so others can find it. What single virtue will you practice this week that could ripple beyond your own life?

Mark seven twenty through twenty-three. And then he added, It is what comes from within side that defiles you. For from within, out of a person's heart come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within. They are what defile you. Marlene Ferris, july twenty fourth, twenty fifteen, Santa Cruz, no, Santa Maria, California. Be with those who are abused, abandoned, taken advantage of. Help us to care for the widow and the orphan with actions and deeds, the poor and the needy. And God in my words have fallen, please. Your sons and we pray. Amen. Marriage verse for today. 1 Corinthians 11, 7 through 9. A man shouldn't have his head covered because he is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the man's glory. Man didn't have his origin from woman, but woman from man. And man wasn't created for the sake of the woman, but the woman for the sake of the man. Wonder how often that's taught in most churches across the nation today. Mark 7, 1 through 23. One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They noticed that some of his disciples had failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating. The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands, as required by their ancient traditions. Similarly, they don't eat anything from the market until they immerse their hands in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to, such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles. So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law ask him, Why don't your disciples follow our age old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand washing ceremony. Jesus replied, You hypocrites, Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God. Father, help us. Help our hearts never to be far from you. Help our hearts to be close to you. For you ignore God's law and substitute your own tradition. Then he said, you skillfully sidestep God's law in order to hold on to your own tradition. I can't help but think here, folks, how how many of us today make excuses for why we shouldn't have to follow parts of God's law. Feminism pops to mind, but we all do it to a certain degree. We make excuses about, well, today's society, it's different. We don't have to follow those because they're old. It's not the same anymore, right? I read a great line, I wish I had it in front of me from a book recently. And one of the characters said, you know, time and age don't change right and wrong. That's a paraphrase, but it's a pretty good one. Then he said, You skillfully sidestep God's law in order to hold on to your own tradition. For instance, Moses gave you this law from God, honor your father and mother. And anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death. But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, Sorry, I can't help you, for I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you. In this way you let them disregard their needy parents. And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others. Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. All of you listen, he said, and try to understand. It's not what goes into your body that defiles you. You are defiled by what comes from your heart. Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used. Don't you understand either? He asked. Food doesn't go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God's eyes. And then he added, It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within. They are what defile you. I need to work on that, folks. The things that come from my heart. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. For troubles surround me too many to count. My sins pile up so high I can't see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head, I have lost all courage. If you're feeling bad, folks, you might read that again. For troubles surround me too many to count, my sins pile up so high I can't see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head, I have lost all courage. Please, Lord, rescue me, come quickly, Lord, and help me. May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace, let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, Aha, we've got him now. But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout The Lord is great. As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my help helper and my savior, O my God, do not delay. Proverbs ten thirteen through fourteen. Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be beaten with a rod. Wise people treasure knowledge, but the babbling of a fool invites disaster. I wonder how often today we listen to the babbling of fools, social media, news, etc., etc. I probably do far too often. I remembered to move the books. Uh Countryside. This is the first book in the series. Uh second book in the series, Tears of Adina. If you are looking for a family-friendly little gray read, uh, I guess I should show the back sometimes. It's got some reviews on there. You can pause and read through if you're interested. And if you would leave a review if you enjoy it, I would greatly appreciate it. Those help immensely. Also, if you're getting something out of the podcast, if you have five or ten dollars a month you could donate, I would appreciate that. And if you can leave a review, those help the podcast also. So I would be grateful for any or all of those. March 16th, 1978, in Rome, Italy. Members of the Red Brigade's leftist Marxist Leninist group ambushed and kidnapped former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro as he was en route to Parliament, killing five of his bodyguards when they attacked. They held Mauro for 55 days, interrogating him, demanding prisoner releases, and they executed him on May 9, 1978, shooting him 11 times and dumping his body in the trunk of a car in central Rome, trying to send a message to the Italian state and their imperialist allies, capitalism, Christianity, NATO, U.S., etc., etc. This group over a number of years was responsible for assassinations, kneecappings, bombings, killings. Leftism, folks, again and again, right? That's why we talk about this. These are examples. Medal of Honor for today, James Brogan. Also known as James Edward Brogan, Sergeant Indian Campaigns. I don't know why I don't say this every time we read a Medal of Honor from the Indian Campaigns, folks, but tied up with Christopher Columbus, and we talk about him each year or around Christopher Columbus Day, but the idea that the Indians were this peaceful, like utopic society just it bears no resemblance to history. Gulf Company, sixth U.S. Cavalry, U.S. Army, December 14th, 1877. Simon Valley, Arizona. Engaged single-handedly two renegade Indians until his horse was shot under him and then pursued them so long as he was able. Accredited to Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, not awarded posthumously, presented january ninth, eighteen eighty, born eighteen thirty-four, County Dongill, Ireland, died october thirtieth, nineteen oh eight, Summit Hill, Pennsylvania. Buried Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Summit Hill, Pennsylvania. Again, notice the difference in these immigrants that we read with Medal of Honor and the immigrants that we read often illegal immigrants, right? And the mass Muslim immigrants at the beginning of the podcast. One sentence really. No, two. Sorry, I lied. From the letter that we read recently on a podcast from John Adams to Mercy Otis Warren. Such a government is only to be supported by pure religion or austere morals. Public virtue cannot exist in a nation without private. And public virtue is the only foundation of republics. And we are, folks, we were born a republic. You cannot have a republic without virtue. And where do you get virtue, morality? The principles of Christ. I've said this, but it's been a while on the podcast. And this is the thing that drives a lot of people nuts. Any religion, any ideology across the entire world, at any point in history, anywhere, if they have been doing something good, truly moral, those actions line up with the principles of Christ every time. And if they have been doing something truly evil, truly immoral, those actions go against the principles of Christ. And so at the end of the day, everything hinges on those principles. So you might have moral principles taught in another faith or ideology religion. But they're only because they line up with those principles of Christ. And that's always the case. You're never going to find good actions that go against the principles of Christ, and you're never going to find evil actions that are in line with the principles of Christ. Right? This was Douglas MacArthur farewell speech to the Corps Cadets at West Point, May 1962. This is just a small, we've read this, parts of this speech before, just a small snippet that really ties into Adam's when you're talking about virtue, morality. Duty, honor, country. The code which those words perpetrate embraces the highest moral laws and will stand the test of any ethics or philosophies ever promulgated for the uplift of mankind. Its requirements are for the things that are right, and its restraints are from the things that are wrong. The soldier, above all other men, is required to practice the greatest act of religious training sacrifice. Right? In battle and in the face of danger and death, he discloses those divine attributes which his Maker gave when he created man in his own image. No physical courage and no brute instinct can take the place of the divine help, which alone can sustain him. However horrible the incidents of war may be, the soldier who is called upon to offer and to give his life for his country is the noblest development of mankind. Lay one's life down for one's friend. There was a quote from Reagan, I think from a speech in 1964 that I happened to run across today, too, folks. And in it, I wish I had it in front of me. I don't, I'm I'm going to paraphrase just a little bit. He said, he was quoting Lincoln, that we are the last best hope on earth talking about America. And we can either, we'll either save America and therefore liberty for the entire world, or we will help our children step into the first year of a thousand years of darkness. Right? And it all goes back to virtue, morality. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not to temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is a kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. God bless y'all. God bless your families, God bless your marriages if you're married. God bless your nation, wherever you are around the world listening. God bless America. We'll talk to y'all again real soon, folks. Looking forward to it.
