When The Heart Feels Overwhelmed
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
When your heart feels overwhelmed, you don’t need a new distraction. You need a place to stand. We open with Psalm 61, a blunt, beautiful prayer that names the fear and reaches for God as a rock, a refuge, and a shelter that actually holds when life starts to buckle.
From there, we honor marriage with Hebrews 13:4 and talk plainly about sexual sin, forgiveness, and the difference between being pardoned and pretending nothing happened. Grace is real, but so is repentance. If you’ve ever wondered what “change” is supposed to look like after failure, we keep it simple: a real desire to turn back to God, plus real effort over time.
Then we go to Luke 3 and listen to John the Baptist cut through religious posturing. Repentance isn’t a label, a denomination, or a leader you follow. It shows up as fruit. Share what you have. Stop taking what isn’t yours. Quit the false accusations. Learn contentment. And keep your eyes on Jesus Christ, not on status or tribe. We also reflect on Psalm 61 again, Proverbs on kindness versus cruelty, remembering courageous service, and why so many American founders tied good governance to God and the Bible.

Remembering Vanessa Femme
Welcome And Opening Prayer
SPEAKER_01Psalm 61, verses 1 through 4. O God, listen to my cry, hear my prayer. From the ends of the earth I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings. Vanessa Femme, June 27, 2010, Falls Church, Virginia. A 19-year-old college student who was stabbed to death after offering a ride to Julio Miguel Blanco Garcia, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala. Hey folks, this is Jesse Cope back with another episode of the American Soul Podcast. Hope y'all are doing well wherever y'all are, whatever part of the day you're in. I sure do appreciate you joining me, giving me a little bit of your time. Well, we'll try and use it wisely. For those of y'all who continue to share the podcast, thank you. For those of y'all who continue to pray for me and for the podcast, thank you very much. Very, very grateful for your prayers. Father, thank you for today. Thank you for you, Father, and your son Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit. Thank you for your love and your mercy, your grace and your forgiveness of our sins. Through the merit of your son Jesus Christ alone, Father.
SPEAKER_00Thank you for that gift. Please, Father, help us to stay on the narrow path.
SPEAKER_01All the way home to you. Thank you for those who listen to the podcast. Please be with them, Father, be with their families. Bless the marriages of those who are married. Guide those who have children. Father, to raise them, to know you and your son. Please help our nation here in America to turn back to you and your son Jesus Christ. And all those nations around the world where people are listening. Help us to truly love your son, and therefore to follow his commands. To love you with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength. To love our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive us our sins, our lack of gratitude, our pride, our greed, our selfishness, our lust, our covetousness, gossip, slander, judgment of others. Cowardice and unbelief. Help us to overcome them all, Father. We do believe. Be with our military, our law enforcement, be with those overseas, be with the families of those who have died.
SPEAKER_00Be with our firefighters and our EMS as well, Father. Keep them safe, protect them, bring them home safe. Be with their families. And God, our leaders, help them to rule in fear of you, both from the pulpit and in the state. And help us to separate ourselves, folks. Father, please, from evil. And from those who follow it.

The Lord’s Prayer And Blessing
SPEAKER_01And God, my words here, in your son's name we pray. Amen. Marriage verse for today, Hebrews 13, 4. Marriage must be honored in every respect with no cheating on the relationship, because God will judge the sexually immoral person and the person who commits adultery. Obviously, folks, there's forgiveness in those situations. Jesus forgave the woman that was caught in the very act of adultery, didn't condemn her. But that didn't mean there weren't consequences for the actions. And he told the woman at the end to go and sin no more. So that doesn't mean you know we get to just keep doing it. There's got to be some desire, some intent, some effort to follow God, to change, to repent. Luke 3, 1 through 22. It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea. Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee. His brother Philip was ruler over Iteria and Traconus. Lysanius was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John, the son of Zachariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. It's got to be some form of repentance, right, folks. Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord's coming, clear the road for him. The valleys will be filled and the mountains and hills made level, the curves will be straightened and the rough places made smooth. And then all people will see the salvation sent from God. When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, You brood of snakes, who warned you to flee the coming wrath? Prove by the way that you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham. That means nothing. For I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the axe of God's judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the tree. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire. The crowds ask, What should we do? I can't help but think there, folks, when we're reading that, there's nothing else outside of Jesus Christ that can save us. No church denomination, no pope or pastor, or priest, or bishop, or cardinal or superintendent or anything else. And if your salvation, your eternal, your hope and eternal life is dependent upon, well, I belong to this denomination or I follow this person. There's just nowhere in the Bible and scripture where you can go to that and say, Well, I'm I'm a Baptist, I'm a Methodist, I'm Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, I'm Church of Christ, I'm X, Y, or Z. I follow this one or that one, right? Just Jesus Christ. Just Jesus Christ. John replied, If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry. Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, teacher, what should we do? He replied, Collect no more taxes than the government requires. What should we do? asked some soldiers. John replied, Don't extort money or make false accusations, and be content with your pay, Lord. How much do I need to hear that? Do so many of us need to hear that. Be content with your pay. Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. John answered their questions by saying, I baptized you with water, but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am. So much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn, but burning the chaff with never-ending fire. John used many such warnings as he announced the good news to the people. John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother's wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others. We all sin, folks, but we ought to try and avoid the ones we can, right? We don't need to just blatantly add more to our list. One day when the crowds, excuse me, when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit in bodily form descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy. Psalm 61, verses 1 through 8. O God, listen to my cry, hear my prayer. From the ends of the earth I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety. When you feel overwhelmed, folks, when your heart just feels like you can't take any more. For you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings. For you have heard my vows, O God, you have given me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name. Add many years to the life of the king, may his years span the generations, may he reign under God's protection forever. May your unfailing love and faithfulness watch over him. Then I will sing praises to your name forever as I fulfill my vows each day. Each day, folks, each day, whatever vows we've made, including marriage, by the way. Proverbs 11, 16 through 17. A gracious woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth. Your kindness will reward you, but your cruelty will destroy you. Countryside, if you were looking for a family-friendly middle grade fantasy, something that hopefully I manage to put a little bit more of Christ into, even if imperfectly, uh, than a lot of the entertainment that we have out there, especially for our kids these days. This is the first book in the series. Get a chance. If you want to check that out, there's some reviews. Uh there's some more online if you are interested in that. Uh, second book in the series, again, some of the reviews, and there's also some more online. If you enjoy it, if you would leave a review online, that helps immensely and tell some others about it. Same thing with the podcast. Uh, those five-star reviews help a great deal. Uh, so does you telling other people about it, word of mouth, right? That's that's a huge deal. And then if you have five or ten dollars, right? A cup of coffee that you can spare each month, there's a link in the show notes where you can do that, and I would be very grateful for that as well. You hear a lot of things today, folks, uh about Iran, Islam, et cetera, et cetera. That's one of the reasons that we do these little sections. You really want to know what Islam is, right? And you don't hear any outcry from the vast majority of followers, which tells you that it's mainstream, just like with communism, socialism, leftism. 27 girls, Derby sex abuse ring victims from 2005 to 2009 in Derby, UK. Girls as young as 12 were groomed with alcohol, drugs, and gifts, then repeatedly raped, sexually assaulted, and prostituted by a gang of nine men, mostly Muslim, mostly Pakistani, led by Abid Mohammed Siddiq, and Mohammed Roman Licket. Yeah, Muslim. Muslim, folks, that that's that is Islam. Medal of Honor today, Lorenzo Dow Brown, private Indian Campaigns, Alpha Company, 7th U.S. Infantry, U.S. Army, August 9th, 1877, Big Hole, Montana. After having been severely wounded in the right shoulder, continued to do duty in a most courageous manner. Accredited to Indianapolis, Indiana, not awarded posthumously, presented May 8, 1878. Born December 1851, Davidson County, North Carolina, died April 17, 1906, near Jonesboro, Arkansas. Lorenzo Dow Brown. Just another name, folks. We need to remember more than all the pop stars and singers, songwriters, actors, actresses, song lyrics, movie lines, professional college athlete statistics, right? And teach our children. Abraham Lincoln, probably a pretty good one, right? In regard for this great book, talking about the Bible, I have this to say it is the best gift God has ever given to man. Has given to man. All the good Savior gave to this world was communicated through this book. Andrew Jackson, seventh president. That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests. We take away the rock, folks. We take away the Bible. There is no concrete foundation for our nation. It's like building the house on sand. We take the Bible out of the center of our constitutions, our institutions, our family life, right? There's nothing to hold us together. It's just like building a house on sand. John Quincy Adams, sixth president. The first and almost the only book deserving of universal attention is the Bible. I speak as a man of the world and I say to you, search the scriptures. George Washington, our very first president. There's a lot of people out there that will claim maybe he said, maybe he didn't say this. It's attributed to George Washington. The reason I bring that up, folks, is most of our academia today is controlled by the left and has been for some decades now. And so anything that you suddenly hear today, when somebody comes out and there's a quote that's that hasn't been questioned for a long time and then all of a sudden it is questioned, I would just recommend that you be very suspect of the modern criticism. And the burden of proof is on them to prove that it didn't come from like this quote from George Washington when he said it's impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible. Because obviously that doesn't line up with the leftist, communist, socialist, Nazi, fascist, Muslim worldview desires. But just make sure if you if you see a quote, there's a great one from Patrick Henry. I don't have it in front of me right now. But the burden of proof has to be on those people saying, no, they didn't say that. Just some extra thoughts there. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not to temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. God bless y'all, folks. God bless your families, God bless your marriages if you're married. God bless your nation, wherever you are around the world listening. God bless America. We'll talk to y'all again real soon. Looking forward to it.
