The Gospel of John doesn’t ease us in. It starts with a claim that rearranges everything: the Word already exists, the Word is God, and the Light shines in the darkness even when the world refuses to recognize him. We read John 1 aloud and sit with the uncomfortable question it raises for all of us: if Jesus came to his own and was rejected, what does acceptance actually look like in real life, not just in words?
We also pray for mercy, forgiveness, and guidance, then broaden that prayer to our public life, asking God to steady our leaders, protect those who serve, and help our country return to him. Along the way we read Scripture that presses on everyday habits and character: Song of Solomon’s picture of love and marriage, Psalm 101’s call to integrity in our own homes, and Proverbs 14’s reminder that laughter can hide grief but can’t heal it.
The conversation turns toward examples of darkness in the world, then back toward courage and duty with a Medal of Honor spotlight, and finally into American history through brief lines from Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt on charity, healing, and faith. We close with the Lord’s Prayer, because if anything is going to hold a family or a nation together, it’s not pride or noise, it’s repentance and the Light of Christ. Prayer For Mercy And Leaders

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. Fourteen-year-old girl, 2025, Essex, UK, sexually assaulted by Hadouche Kobatu, an Ethiopian national, who had arrived in the UK on a small boat just days earlier. Hey folks, this is Jesse Cope, back with another episode of the American Soul Podcast. Hope y'all are doing well. Wherever y'all are, whatever part of the day you're in. Sure do appreciate y'all joining me, giving me a little bit of your time and attention, a little piece of your day. I will try and use it wisely. SPEAKER_00Marriage verse for today comes from Song of Solomon or Song of Songs, chapter one, verses twelve through seventeen. While the king was at his table, my perfume spread its fragrance. My beloved is to me a satchet of myrrh resting between my breasts. My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of Vengeti. How beautiful you are, my darling. Oh how beautiful. Your eyes are doves. How handsome you are, my beloved. Oh how charming. And our bed is verdant. The beams of our house are cedars, our rafters, our firs. John one one through twenty-eight. In the beginning, the word already existed. The word was with God, and the word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light, he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who is the true light who gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He came into the very world he created, but the world didn't recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. So the word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness, and we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son. John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, This is the one I was talking about when I said someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me. From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another, for the law was given through Moses, but God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God but the unique one, who is himself God. He is near to the Father's heart, he is revealed God to us. This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, Who are you? He came right out and said, I am not the Messiah. Well then, who are you? They ask, Are you Elijah? No, he replied. Are you the prophet we are expecting? No. Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself? John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah, I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, clear the way for the Lord's coming. Then the Pharisees who had been sent asked him, If you aren't the Messiah or Elijah or the prophet, what right do you have to baptize? John told them, I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. Though his ministry follows mine, I am not even worthy to be his slave and to untie the straps of his sandal. This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River where John was baptizing. Psalm one o one verses one through eight. I will sing of your love and justice, Lord. I will praise you with songs. I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly. I will have nothing to do with them. I will reject perverse ideas, and will stay away from evil people, ever from every evil. I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors, I will not endure conceit and pride. I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me. I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence. My daily task will be to ferret out the wicked and free the city of the Lord from their grip. Proverbs fourteen verses thirteen through fourteen. Laughter can conceal a heavy heart, but when the laughter ends, the grief remains. Backsliders get what they deserve, good people receive their reward. A little bit from a five-star review on Amazon by Mandy George. Countryside is a fantastic read. I read this book in just a couple of days. Cope created a magical world centered around the Rayburn family. Continues on. Shakila Imran, a Muslim woman in an honor killing after running away from home to escape a forced marriage and refusing to return to her abusive family. Her mother was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The point here, though, folks, the really telling thing is that this is the mother doing this, not the father, uncle, or brother, or cousin, right? Not any of the male relations. This is the mother, the girl's own mother. And that really gives you some insight that we just don't appreciate enough in America about how cancerous this ideology is, right? That a mother would kill her own child. Of course, we support abortion here in America to the tune of 60 million plus, but nonetheless, that a mother would kill her own child because she didn't want to be abused. Lincoln FDR And Turning Back To God
SPEAKER_00Wanted to read one more. October twenty-third, two thousand two, Moscow, Russia. Forty Chechen Muslims took 900 hostages in the Dubrovka Theater during a musical performance. Held the hostages for three days. Russian special forces eventually ended the siege. Hundred and thirty hostages were killed. Many more were injured. All the terrorists were killed during the rescue operation. Muslims claimed responsibility. Etc. etc. Just another example, folks, of Islam, which again always goes hand in glove with leftism, socialism, communism, Nazism, fascism. Right. Gonna read another couple of the little snippets from inaugural addresses from our presidents. Abraham Lincoln march fourth, eighteen sixty five, right, toward the end of the Civil War. With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right. Let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations. Probably pretty imperative that we pay a lot of attention these days to history around our Revolutionary War, which was in fact our first Civil War, right? And then our war in the 1860s, which we actually refer to as our Civil War, might be pretty pretty important soon, sadly. Franklin Roosevelt, January twentieth, nineteen forty-five.

Lord’s Prayer And Blessing
SPEAKER_00Eighteen sixty-five, nineteen forty-five. And if you notice, right, we're twenty, twenty-five, twenty-six right now, another eighty years later. The Almighty God has blessed our land in many ways. He has given our people stout hearts and strong arms with which to strike mighty blows for freedom and truth. He has given to our country a faith, which has become the hope of all peoples in an anguished world. So we pray to him now for the vision to see our way clearly, to see the way that leads to a better life for ourselves and for all our fellow men, to the achievement of his will to peace on earth, right? Bible reference there by FDR, direct reference to God and Jesus Christ, because that's the way we were founded, folks. That's the only way we function. That's the only hope that we have as individuals or as a nation is to turn back to God and Jesus Christ. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not to temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. God bless y'all. God bless your families and your marriages.
