Drop us a note about the podcast.
The world feels louder, harsher, and more unpredictable by the day, but Jesus does not pretend otherwise. We start with John 16:33 and the straight talk many of us need: trials and sorrows are real, yet peace is still possible because Christ has overcome the world. I reflect on how easily I act surprised by pain, and why remembering Jesus’ words can turn fear into steadiness, courage, and long-range hope.
From there, we get practical about marriage with 1 Corinthians 7:3–6. I talk about mutual marital duty, why intimacy in a covenant is not “optional,” and how brief abstinence only makes sense when both spouses agree and the purpose is devotion to prayer. The goal is not shame or legalism, but honesty about temptation, self-control, and what sacrificial love looks like in everyday married life.
We also read Psalm 119:65–80 and Proverbs 16:4–5, tying personal discipline to national character. Then we address troubling crime stories connected to immigration and asylum claims, and I ask what truthfulness, justice, and compassion should look like in public policy. We close with a quick American heritage segment, including a Medal of Honor remembrance and a pointed reminder from the Founding era about the Bible and education. If this conversation helps you think clearer and stand firmer, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find it.

Opening Scripture And A Hard Headline
SPEAKER_00John sixteen thirty three. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. May twenty second, twenty twenty six. Crystal Lobardo Vasquez, Vasquez, Sanchez, Arlington, Virginia. He sexually assaulted a woman in a stairwell of a residential parking garage. Twenty-five years old. He's an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. With a prior criminal history, including rape and sexual assault charges. Welcome And Prayer For The Hurting
SPEAKER_00Hey folks, this is Jesse Cope, back with another episode of the American Soul Podcast. Hope y'all are doing well. Wherever y'all are, whatever part of the day you're in. Sure do appreciate you joining me, giving me a little bit of your time and attention, a little piece of your day. I will try and use it wisely. For those of y'all who continue to pray for me and for the podcast, thank you very much. Very grateful for your prayers. And for those of y'all who have joined us over on the Sister Podcast, the American Christian Heritage, glad to see you there too. Hope you got something out of it. We will do that one at least for now, every two weeks on Thursday. So it'll be a couple weeks. And then we'll we'll put out the next one over there. So a little deeper dive into some of the topics that we discuss here on the podcast. Father, thank you for today. Thank you for you, Father, and your son Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit. Thank you for your love and your mercy, your grace, and your forgiveness of sins through the merit of your son Jesus Christ. Father, please be with those who are anxious, upset, concerned, depressed, suicidal, even, scared. Help us to trust you in those moments where we have doubts and fears, whether they're rare or frequent, when we have heartache and pain, when we don't understand, Father, why things happen. This world seems so chaotic, so twisted, so filled with so much pain, Father, and sometimes, often perhaps, we simply don't understand. Help us to look to you, to trust in you, to do your will in all things. Help us to care for those who feel alone or abandoned. Be with our leaders. Help them to rule in fear of you. Be with those who protect us. Protect them and keep them safe, Father, please. And guide my words here. Your son's name we pray. Amen.
Marriage Duty And Mutual Self-Giving
SPEAKER_00Marriage verses for today, 1 Corinthians 7, 3 through 6, the husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps, perhaps, by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command. You don't have to abstain, Cooks. You can, for brief periods of time, if both parties agree, in order to devote yourself to prayer and fasting. Some other translations say fasting. But this idea today that's so prevalent inside the church that our marital duties to our spouse are optional. Oh Lord, help us all.
John 16 On Peace And Overcoming
SPEAKER_00John 16, 1 through 33. I have told you these things so that you won't abandon your faith, for you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I am telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my one. I didn't tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer. But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I've told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away. Because if I don't, the advocate won't come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you, and when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin and of God's righteousness and of the coming judgment. The world's sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged. There is much more I want to tell you, but you can't bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine. This is why I said, the Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me. In a little while you won't see me anymore, but a little while after that you will see me again. Some of the disciples ask each other, what does he mean when he says, In a little while you won't see me, but then you will see me. And I am going to the Father. And what does he mean by a little while? We don't understand. Jesus realized I wanted to ask him about it, so he said, Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said, In a little while you won't see me. But a little while after that you will see me again. I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me. But the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn into wonderful joy. It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor when her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. You haven't done this before. Ask using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father. Then you will ask in my name. I am not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, for the Father Himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God. Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father. Then his disciples said, At last you were speaking plainly and not figuratively. Now we understand that you know everything, and there's no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God. Jesus asked, Do you finally believe? But the time is coming, indeed, it's here now when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart because I have overcome the world. I
Why Trials Should Not Surprise Us
SPEAKER_00forget too often, folks, that we will have many trials and sorrows. I act as if that's somehow shocking or surprising when I run into these painful events. It's not. We had a preacher years ago, I've said this on the podcast before, that I loved dearly. And one of the things that he used to say, he said, if you're not suffering somehow for Christ, he said, I question whether you're really following Christ at all. And those things in our lives that you know you're specifically suffering for Christ. There's a relationship that's been damaged or destroyed. There's a business deal that you didn't get to be a part of. There's something in your life, injury, illness, heartache. And you are enduring that for the name of Jesus Christ. Right? Let that strengthen your faith. Let that give you courage and hope and confidence and joy. That one day you will get to spend all of eternity with God and Jesus Christ. Where there's no more sorrow, no more tears, no more heartache, no more pain, no more injury, no more illness, no more anxiety or depression or fear or doubts. Only joy and happiness and peace and safety and love. And right, use that as motivation to share that with others so that they don't miss out on that. Psalm
Psalm 119 On Discipline And Hope
SPEAKER_00119, 65 through 80. Tef. You have done many good things for me, Lord, just as you promised. I believe in your commands. Now teach me good judgment and knowledge. I used to wander off until you discipline me, but now I closely follow your word. You were good and do only good. Teach me your decrees. Arrogant people smear me with lies, but in truth I obey your commandments with all my heart. Their hearts are dull and stupid, but I delight in your instructions. My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees. Your instructions are more valuable to me than millions in gold and silver. Yod, you have made me, you created me. You made me, you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your commands. May all who fear you find in me a cause for joy, for I have put my hope in your word. I know, O Lord, that your regulations are fair, you disciplined me because I needed it. Now let your unfailing love comfort me just as you promised me, your servant. Surround me with your tender mercy so I may live, for your instructions are my delight. Bring disgrace upon the arrogant people who lied about me. Meanwhile, I will concentrate on your commandments. Let me be united with all who fear you, with those who know your laws. May I be blameless in keeping your decrees, then I will never be ashamed. Proverbs sixteen, four-five. The Lord has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster. The Lord detests the proud, so they will surely be punished.
Immigration Narratives And Violent Crime
SPEAKER_00May tenth, twenty twenty five. Park area, Lemmington Spa, Warwickshire. Two Muslim men, seventeen at the time, Afghan nationals who arrived in the UK as unaccompanied minors on small boats. They were asylum seekers. They raped a 15-year-old girl who was separated from her friends and led by the pair into a secluded area. Pushed her to the ground, and each raped or the attack was described in the court as horrific. Notice this case, folks. Both of these were minors, asylum seekers. Right? Those are supposed to be, according to the left and the media, those should be individuals that never cause any problems. Right? Those are the dreamers. They just want to come to America for a better life. They want to make the nation stronger, better, or the UK in this case, right? The West in general. Medal
Honor, Heritage, And The Bible In Schools
SPEAKER_00of Honor, winner for today, Dennis Byrne, Sergeant, Indian Campaigns, Gulf Company, 5th U.S. Infantry, U.S. Army, October 21st, 1876 through January 8th, 1877. Cedar Creek, etc., Montana. Gallantry and engagements. That's it. That's all we get for that one. Accredited to New York, New York, not awarded posthumously, presented July 18, 1877, at parade at the cantonment at the Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers, Montana Territory by General William T. Sherman. Born 1833, Wexford, Ireland, died December 31st, 1905, Birds Island, Minnesota. Buried Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul, Minnesota. Dennis Byrne. Recognize here again, folks, the difference in the immigrants that we've talked about on the podcast. There is a difference between immigrants historically that have come from predominantly Christian nations versus those that come from Islamic or come with a socialist, Marxist, leftist worldview. Woodrow Wilson. We're not going to read all of this, obviously, because he put his hand on Psalm 119. And if you know anything about Psalm 119, it is a massive chapter. So there's a lot that's great there. We've actually, if you recognize that, we've been reading out of Psalm 119 for a few days on the podcast. Fisher Ames. Fisher Ames was one of our founding fathers. He was one of the men who helped to draft the Bill of Rights. In particular, he was the man that came up with the wording for the establishment clause that has been so erroneously used to kick Christianity out of our national institutions for the last 80 years. In combination with twisting Thomas Jefferson's separation of church and state commentary and a letter to the Danbury Baptist preacher. This is a quote, though, from Fisher Ames again. We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education. We're starting to put more and more textbooks into our schools. We've become accustomed of late of putting little books into the hands of children containing fables and moral lessons. We are spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should be the principal text of our schools. The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any other man-made book. The very man who worded the establishment clause of our first amendment says that the Bible should be the principal text of our schools. And you see the same trend, right? You see the pushing of the Bible out of out of school to replace it with all these little cutesy books that are supposed to have these same lessons, right? That's the way it's it's presented. Oh, we're not really changing anything, you know, important. We're just we're making it more approachable for a wider audience or some such nonsense, folks. If we have any hope of saving our nation, we have to turn back to God and Jesus Christ as individuals and publicly in our institutions as a nation, particularly including the education of our youth, our public schools. And and our founders knew that. Fisher Ames again. He knew that. Bible should be the principle, not just a text, but the principle text.
Final Blessing And Closing
SPEAKER_00Amen. God bless y'all. God bless your families, your marriages, your children, your nation, wherever you are around the world listening. God bless America. We'll talk to you all again real soon, folks. Looking forward to it.
