Why We Keep Forgetting History And Then Act Surprised

Paul hears the warnings, sees the grief in his friends, and still says yes to the road ahead. We start with Acts 21 and that gut-level line, “The Lord’s will be done,” because it exposes a question we all live with: do we obey God only when it feels safe, or do we follow Jesus when it costs us comfort, reputation, and control?

From there we talk about memory and moral formation. When a culture refuses to look at evil, it also refuses to learn from it and becomes easier to deceive. We connect that to why history matters, from 9/11 to the way atrocities like the Holodomor get ignored, softened, or forgotten. If we do not teach our kids what happened, they will grow up repeating the same mistakes with fresh confidence.

We also get practical and personal. We read Song of Solomon and talk about marriage, physical intimacy, and what the church often avoids saying out loud. Then we zoom back out to America’s Christian heritage, “separation of church and state,” and key Supreme Court cases that pushed prayer and Bible reading out of public schools, plus what we believe it has done to our national life.

She died of a heart attack caused by the repeated sexual assault, which I caught on closed circuit TV.

9/11 Memory And Historical Amnesia

I've heard over the years a number of times a number of different people make the comment that the videos from 9-11 of the towers being hit, the people jumping to their deaths, the injuries and illnesses that came later, the fear and despair of that day, the people covered in ash and soot and everything else. The families of the firefighters that were lost, the families of everyone who was lost, that those ought to be showed every single day TV schools, certainly schools.

Song Of Solomon And Marriage Intimacy

Marriage verses for today Song of Solomon seven nine through thirteen. Your mouth like the best wine, may the wine go straight to my beloved, flowing gently over lips and teeth. Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages, let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom. There I will give you my love. The mandrakes send out their fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, both new and old, that I have stored up for you, my beloved. Tell you what, folks, it doesn't take much of a stretch to read Song of Solomon and realize that our marriages, that physical intimacy is supposed to be a a very vibrant and important and frequent daily part of our marriages. You have to wonder what the marriages inside the church would look like if we actually taught Song of Solomon. Think about just obviously you can't answer me right now, but think about this. When was the last time that you heard a sermon on Song of Solomon specifically tailored toward marriage and physical intimacy and the roles of men and women?

Acts 21 Journey And Costly Faith

Acts 21, 1 through 17, after saying farewell to the Ephesian elders, we, Luke, Paul, and their companions, sailed straight to the island of Kos. The next day we reached Rhodes and then went to Patara. There we boarded a ship sailing for Phoenicia. We sighted the island of Cyprus, passed it on our left, and landed at the harbor of Tyr in Syria, where the ship was to unload cargo. We went ashore, found the local believers, and stayed with them a week. These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that Paul should not go on to Jerusalem. When we returned to the ship at the end of the week, the entire congregation, including women and children, left the city and came down to the shore with us. There we knelt, prayed, and said our farewells. Then we went aboard and they returned home. The next stop after leaving Tyr was Betolemus, where we were greeted, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed for one day. The next day we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the evangelist, one of the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food. He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy. Several days later, a man named Agabas, who also had the gift of prophecy, arrived from Judea. He came over, took Paul's belt, and bound his own hand and feet, feet and hands with it. And then he said, The Holy Spirit declares, so shall the owner of this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles. When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. But he said, Why all this weeping, you are breaking my heart. I am ready not only to be jailed at Jerusalem, but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus. When it was clear that we couldn't persuade him, we gave up and said, The Lord's will be done. After this, we packed our things and left for Jerusalem. Some believers from Caesarea accompanied us and they took us to the home of Mason, a man originally from Cyprus and one of the early believers. When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem welcomed us warmly. Are we willing to go on in life, knowing what sorrow and heartache might await? Or if we knew.

Praise, Justice, And The Pull Of Gossip

Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful. O Israel, rejoice in your maker, O people of Jerusalem, exult in your king, praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine and harp. For the Lord delights in his people, he crowns the humble with victory. Let the faithful rejoice that he honors them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds. Let the praises of God be in their mouths and a sharp sword in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, to bind their kings with shackles, and their leaders with iron chains, to execute the judgment written against them. This is a glorious privilege of his faithful ones. Praise the Lord. Proverbs 18 8, rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one's heart. There's a lot of truth there, isn't it, folks? How often do we just are we desperate for rumors and gossip?

Supreme Court, Schools, And Returning To God

I can't even remember where I got into this within the last few days, but at some point we were talking about education online and on X or somewhere, talking about how little we knew the Bible, right? And you can go back and look at the commentary at the beginning of this podcast talking about the fact that over the last 25 years, if they had showed the footage and talked to the students in New York as they grew up and turned into voting age adults about 9-11, there's no way that they would have a Muslim, any Muslims in power in New York right now. Much less really in the city, probably. But we don't, because we don't teach history. We ignore it. It's not cool, it's not fun, it's boring, right? We don't teach the Bible. People make the same comments about that. So I just wanted to run through real quick quick kind of what we've done, some of the things that we've done over the last 80 years, uh, give or take. You know, 1947, the Supreme Court, Everson uh or Emerson v. Board of Education. I always get those two confused, but it was the separation of church and state, right? The Supreme Court said they used Jefferson's quote from a letter a decade plus after the Constitution was ratified, and Jefferson wasn't present there, also, by the way. But even still, they took what he wrote and twisted it to mean something it never did. And that kind of that that started it all in the 20th century, right after World War II, because what it what it very erroneously, really you could say evilly, what the what the Civil War did, I mean the Supreme Court did that was really evil is they said that we weren't a Christian Republic and our founders didn't want anything to do with Christ in our public life, which we spend pretty much every day on the podcast for the last six years in some form or fashion debunking that lie, that myth. But here's some other things that we've done. And this is the Supreme Court. It's interesting, these are all Supreme Court cases we're talking about today. Ingall versus Vital, 1962. Prayer and its public school system breaches the Constitution's wall of separation between church and state. See, they go back to that 1947 separation of church and state. What Jefferson really meant was he meant that the state wasn't going to choose one particular Christian denomination to favor, because that's what had happened in Europe and Britain, uh, Catholic Church, Anglican Church, and then people that didn't follow those, they were punished, murdered, executed, tortured, raped, right, because they didn't belong to the right denomination. And that marriage between the state and the denomination was evil. Not the marriage between the state and Christianity, the general principles of Christ. That was the best thing possible for those countries. But the marriage between a particular denomination, right? Uh Abington versus Schump, 1963. No state law or school board may require that passages from the Bible be read or that the Lord's Prayer be recited in the public schools of the state at the beginning of each school day, which is so idiotic, it's hard to even overstate how idiotic this is from this Supreme Court. Because what was the very first thing our Continental Congress did? Prayer. Right? And then you look at the Constitutional Convention when it was just about to fall apart. What did what did Benjamin Franklin stand up and say? Prayer. The history of our founding is full of prayer. Bible verses. And we used to know it so well, like Benjamin Franklin said, he didn't have to tell the Americans what the Bible verses were because they knew their Bible so well, they knew the verses when he would give talks and speeches, etc. Stone versus Graham, 1980. If the posted copies of the Ten Commandments are to have any effect at all, it will be to introduce the school children to read and meditate upon, perhaps to venerate and obey the commandments. This is not permission permissible state objective under the establishment clause. Good creep. Okay, establishment clause. The guy that actually wrote the establishment clause, Fisher Ames, said that the Bible should not only be a textbook, it should be the textbook because it taught morals and virtues better than anything else. So again, Supreme Court decision here in 1980, these Supreme Court justices are so unhinged from reality. They're saying, well, we can't teach the Ten Commandments because that would be horrible. It would have school children. Have you even read the Ten Commandments? Why would you not, even if you were an atheist, why would you not want the Ten Commandments? Don't cheat, don't steal, don't kill, don't commit adultery, et cetera, et cetera. Why would you not want that taught to your children? I mean, that tells you a lot right there. But again, they use the establishment clause to justify this. But the guy that actually worded the establishment clause said that the Bible should be the primary text in schools, not a text, the primary. One more that actually comes from multiple cases. I'll leave you alone. Graham versus Central 1985, Kay versus Douglas, 1986, Yeager versus Douglas, 1989, and Lee versus Wiseman 1992, so 80s and 90s, right? Religious invocation in high school commencement exercises conveyed the message that the district had given its endorsement to prayer and religion so that that school district was probably prohibited from including invocation in commencement exercises. Again, how little do you have to know history, or how evil do your motives have to be if you do know history to make this kind of again, the word fits, asinine comment about not using prayer in school when the very first thing our founders did when they thought that Boston was being destroyed was turned to God in prayer, when the constitutional convention was falling apart, and Benjamin Franklin stood up, who's supposed to be this crazy deist who didn't want anything to do with Christianity, and specifically talked about prayer, not to some random, not to Allah or Buddha or some random false God like that, but to God the Father of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. It is no, it's it's actually a miracle that we still exist as a nation, that we haven't gone so far that God hasn't already already just ripped us apart. Jefferson, right? I tremble for my country because I know that God is just and his justice cannot sleep forever. We've been thumbing our nose at God, mocking him, rebuking him, kicking him out for so long now. It is a miracle that we're still here. And it's just ignorance, at best, gross ignorance, and really more likely, malevolence. And if we have any hope, folks, the only hope, the only, and it's a great solution. It's a great hope. The hope that we have is turning back to God and Jesus Christ as a people in our public lives, not just our private lives, but our public lives and teaching our children. If we'd been teaching our children the Bible for the last 80 years, we would not be in the mess we're in today. If we'd been teaching our children about 9-11 for the past 25 years, we wouldn't have a Muslim socialist running New York into the ground right now, or Muslims threatening at all different parts of the nation. If we had been teaching for the last century what happened in communist Russia and China to the millions and millions starved and murdered, we wouldn't have children growing into adults flirting with communism, Marxism again. But we haven't. We haven't taught it. And folks, honestly, a lot of it is on us that consider ourselves conservative. We checked out. Checked out in our own families, checked out publicly. We just went about our own business. Somebody else will do it, somebody else will teach it. That can't ever happen. We're more interested in TikTok and Instagram and TV. I'm guilty here too, folks. I'm guilty here too. Sports, video games, fishing, golfing, whatever it is that you do, shopping. I know I went way over, folks. God bless y'all and your patience. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
